It’s been a very long time since I got into the Warhammer 40K hobby. Circa mid to late 90s. Nineteen nineties. My early GW adventures included buying a starter box of 3rd Edition Warhammer 40K from an actual Games Workshop store – Yes, before the rebrand. If I recall correctly, it was $99+tax. I subsequently bought (previously?) a set of Catachan and Legion of the Damned box sets in addition to a starter Citadel Paints set. I remember the Legion minis were metal, but the Jungle Fighters were plastic. Those were the good ol’ days. I even splurged my allowance on a GW clamshell carrying case – you remember the ones with the red foam inserts. Those days are gone having sold everything, but the 3rd edition core rulebook on eBay.
It is June 2026. I did the unthinkable and impulsed the purchase of an 11th edition WH40K starter box (Armageddon) – $295+tax.
I know. I know. You say, “You already have a massive backlog of models, minis, and the like.” Plus a $300+ purchase in this economy of $5+/gallon gas is not prudent nor practical. But I say, in a world of impractical choices, I chose myself. And I can live with that. Do I have debts to pay, kids to get thru the rest of their education cycles and young Adulting lives, supporting a spouse with their burgeoning retail empire? Yes. But sometimes, not often, you just gotta splurge on the things that give you a little sunshine in an otherwise dreary existence. Bruh. It’s not that bad. Is it?!
So. Should I open it, or should I keep it sealed?!
